Calculate tip amount and split the bill among friends
A tip calculator is a tool that computes the tip amount you should add to a restaurant, hotel, or service bill, and optionally splits the total among multiple people. Tipping is a widespread practice in many countries โ especially in restaurants, for taxi drivers, hotel staff, delivery workers, and personal care services. Calculating the correct tip manually, especially when splitting with a group, can be confusing and time-consuming.
Calculator Expert's Tip Calculator lets you set any tip percentage, enter the number of people, and instantly see how much each person owes โ including their share of both the bill and the tip.
Example: โน2,000 bill, 15% tip, 4 people:
Poor service: 5โ10%. Average service: 10โ15%. Good service: 15โ18%. Excellent service: 20โ25%. Outstanding/fine dining: 25%+. These are general guidelines โ tip culture varies by country. In India, tipping is customary but not mandatory; 5โ10% is common at restaurants. In the USA, 15โ20% is considered standard for most service situations.
Dining at restaurants with friends and splitting the bill equally. Calculating tip at hotels for room service or bellhop. Figuring out how much to tip a delivery driver or cab driver. Group outings where the host wants to collect the right amount from each person. Corporate dinners where expense reports need exact breakdown. Events where a service charge percentage needs to be computed.
To calculate 10% tip: move the decimal point one place left (โน800 bill โ โน80 tip). For 15%: calculate 10% and add half of it (โน80 + โน40 = โน120). For 20%: double the 10% amount (โน80 ร 2 = โน160). For odd percentages, use our calculator for accuracy. When splitting, divide the total by the number of people โ if it doesn't divide evenly, round up for simplicity.
Many restaurants add a mandatory "service charge" (typically 5โ10%) to the bill, especially in India. This is different from a voluntary tip. A service charge is collected by the restaurant and may be distributed among all staff, while a tip given directly to the waiter stays with them. Check your bill carefully โ if a service charge is already included, adding an additional tip is optional. The Central Consumer Protection Authority in India has clarified that hotels and restaurants cannot force consumers to pay service charges.
Enter the total bill amount. Click a quick-select tip percentage button or type a custom percentage. Enter the number of people splitting the bill. Choose rounding preference. Click Calculate to see tip amount, total, and per-person breakdown. The quick reference table shows what the tip and total would be at 5 common tip percentages for easy comparison.
This calculator assumes equal splitting among all people. It does not support unequal splitting (where different people ordered different amounts). Tax is not included โ if the bill already includes GST or other taxes, decide whether you want to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total. Currency is not specified โ use any currency unit consistently. For very precise currency splitting (to the last paisa), use the "No rounding" option.
