Example: ₹2,000 bill, 15% tip, 4 people:
Poor service: 5–10%. Average service: 10–15%. Good service: 15–18%. Excellent service: 20–25%. Outstanding/fine dining: 25%+. These are general guidelines — tip culture varies by country. In India, tipping is customary but not mandatory; 5–10% is common at restaurants. In the USA, 15–20% is considered standard for most service situations.

To calculate 10% tip: move the decimal point one place left (₹800 bill → ₹80 tip). For 15%: calculate 10% and add half of it (₹80 + ₹40 = ₹120). For 20%: double the 10% amount (₹80 × 2 = ₹160). For odd percentages, use our calculator for accuracy. When splitting, divide the total by the number of people — if it doesn't divide evenly, round up for simplicity.
Many restaurants add a mandatory "service charge" (typically 5–10%) to the bill, especially in India. This is different from a voluntary tip. A service charge is collected by the restaurant and may be distributed among all staff, while a tip given directly to the waiter stays with them. Check your bill carefully — if a service charge is already included, adding an additional tip is optional. The Central Consumer Protection Authority in India has clarified that hotels and restaurants cannot force consumers to pay service charges.

This calculator assumes equal splitting among all people. It does not support unequal splitting (where different people ordered different amounts). Tax is not included — if the bill already includes GST or other taxes, decide whether you want to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total. Currency is not specified — use any currency unit consistently. For very precise currency splitting (to the last paisa), use the "No rounding" option.
