Introduction

What is a GPA Calculator?

A GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator is a tool that computes your academic performance score based on the grades you received and the credit hours of each course. GPA is the standard metric used by schools, colleges, and universities worldwide to measure a student's academic achievement. It is used for scholarship eligibility, academic probation decisions, honor roll placement, graduate school admissions, and employer assessments.

Calculator Expert's GPA Calculator supports three grading scales โ€” the 4.0 scale used in the USA, the 10.0 scale commonly used in Indian universities, and percentage-based systems. It calculates both single-semester GPA and cumulative CGPA across multiple semesters.

Formula

GPA Calculation Formula

Grade Points = Grade Value ร— Credit Hours (per course)
GPA = ฮฃ(Grade Points) รท ฮฃ(Credit Hours)

Example (4.0 scale):
Math A (4 credits) = 4.0 ร— 4 = 16 pts
Physics B+ (3 credits) = 3.3 ร— 3 = 9.9 pts
English Aโˆ’ (3 credits) = 3.7 ร— 3 = 11.1 pts
GPA = (16 + 9.9 + 11.1) รท (4+3+3) = 37 รท 10 = 3.70
Chart

GPA Classification Scale

On a 4.0 scale: 3.7โ€“4.0 = First Class with Distinction / Summa Cum Laude. 3.3โ€“3.69 = First Class / Magna Cum Laude. 3.0โ€“3.29 = Cum Laude. 2.5โ€“2.99 = Second Class. 2.0โ€“2.49 = Passing. Below 2.0 = Academic probation risk. On India's 10.0 scale: 9.0+ = Outstanding, 7.5โ€“8.99 = Excellent, 6.0โ€“7.49 = Good, 5.0โ€“5.99 = Average, below 5.0 = Needs improvement.

Use Cases

Who Uses GPA Calculators?

Undergraduate students tracking semester performance for scholarship eligibility. Graduate school applicants calculating whether their GPA meets minimum requirements. Students planning which courses to retake to raise their CGPA. Parents monitoring children's academic progress. HR professionals understanding academic credentials from candidates. Universities computing honor roll lists and academic distinction awards. Students converting between different grading scales for international university applications.

Methods

Manual GPA Calculation Steps

Step 1: Write down each course with its grade letter and credit hours. Step 2: Convert each grade letter to its numeric grade point using your institution's scale. Step 3: Multiply the grade point by the credit hours for each course to get the quality points. Step 4: Add all quality points together. Step 5: Add all credit hours together. Step 6: Divide total quality points by total credit hours. The result is your GPA.

Ponderal Index

GPA vs CGPA vs Percentage

GPA (Grade Point Average) refers to a single semester's average. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average across all completed semesters โ€” it carries more weight academically. Percentage is a raw score out of 100. These three metrics are related but calculated differently. Converting between them varies by institution โ€” a CGPA of 8.5 on a 10.0 scale is often considered equivalent to approximately 85% marks, but conversion policies differ. Always check your university's official conversion formula.

Guide

How to Use This Tool

Select your grading scale (4.0 for US universities, 10.0 for Indian universities, or Percentage). Add courses using the "Add Course" button. Enter the course name (optional), credit hours, and select the grade. Click "Calculate GPA" for your semester result. For CGPA, enter your current CGPA, credits completed so far, and new semester credits โ€” the tool will blend them automatically. The grade reference table below the calculator shows point values for each letter grade on your selected scale.

Limitations

โš ๏ธ Limitations

Grade point values for letter grades vary by institution. This tool uses standard US and Indian university mappings, which may differ from your specific university's grading policy. Pass/Fail and Credit/No-Credit courses are not included. Grade replacement policies (where a retaken course replaces the old grade) must be computed manually. Always verify your final GPA with your official university transcript or academic office.
